Hi everyone,
My husband & neighbor are planning on replacing the neighbor’s 100+ year old slate roof w/ a slate look-alike composite. They have both done do-it-yourself project b4, but I’m a little concerned w/ this one since the roof in question is about 30-35 ft off the ground.
We have several sets of scaffolding, but it looks pretty pitiful compared to the magnitude of the roof. I know there are safety harness kits to anchor to the ridgeline, but some of the roof replacement articles I’ve browsed deal w/ shingles and not w/ slate, and I’m concerned with the weight of the removal, their footing, what other snags they’ll run into 3 stories in the air, etc. Is there a source for a step by step for slate removal and replacement?

if there are leaks, then it would make more sense to keep the original slates and redo the leak areas
i would NOT do a tear off to replace that beautiful roof with composite imitationsMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore

I completely agree with Mike. Fix the leaks, don't replace the slate. And the first place to look is the flashing. Worst case, redo all the flashing and see how that goes.I would think that even paying someone to do this would still be cheaper than a full replacement, DIY.
Removeal of a slate roof, 30-35' in the air is not a dyi project.
Tell your husband that it is too dangerous, unless you want him gone.<G>
Seriously, let the pros handle it!
Hard to tell for sure ,but that slate does't look that bad.
Too bad he can't take slatemans suggestion in the original thread.
Yes, it'd be nice if they could have started this idea with theSlateman and then gone on from there...or if Slateman didn't live so far away ; )
I don't know the full replacement story, I know he's getting some leaks, and does have some broken/missing tiles.
Unfortunately, due to cost, diy is the only option. It's just a matter of when they'll start.

If you do decide to forge ahead with this, save the slate. It looks fairly good to me, but I don't think it's near as old as you do. There's should be pretty good salvage value to it. Personally, I'd remove it, install new underlayment, reflash and put the original slate back on with some salvage from elsewhere to replace the broken slate.

But you all knew that. I detailed it extensively in my blog.
There are lots of items you should have to even think about doing that job.
A shingle lift and lots of pipe staging would be almost imperative for a job of that size. It's really not suited for folks that aren't well versed in roofing.
Thats not to say DIY'ers couldn't do it , but it would be challenging

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. You just don't want it to be made public how easy it is to do slate work. Everybody would be doing it and you'd have to start installing those fake slates to make a livng. Bwaahahahaha

Hell, I've done a lot of slate and I'd not want to do it..LOL

A must read.
Has he inquired of any roofers in the area to see if they could fix the problem?
