I would like to detail the exterior walls of my house like the one shown in FHB #160 pg 55 under “better systems”. However, it is not clear to me from the drawing how the two layers of 1″ XPS foam, furring strips, house wrap and siding are attached. It seems obvious to me the rigid foam will have no nail holding strength. If you glued the foam to the plywood and then glued the second piece of foam to the first piece and then glued the house wrap to the second piece of foam, you would still have to spike through the furring strip, house wrap, layers of foam, plywood to reach a stud. Not only are you compromising the house wrap in at least a thousand places, it also seems like a tremendous amount of time/labor/expense. The actual siding will be heavy so it’s apparent the materials underneath need to be firmly attached. Also, how do you handle wall penetrations such as windows? Do the butt seams of the XPS need to be taped? I am not a professional builder and I keep thinking I’m overlooking a very simple and obvious solution. Any help would be appreciated.

Butch,
Second free bump,
Actually I would have done it like this, but good point about the giant block of text. Different resolution settings and browser windows show stuff differently.
What may look best on your machine may not on another, but the giant unformatted block looks plain bad on anyones.

Well, Goodness, Steve, this has got to be the bumpiest thread I have seen in a while.
I have actually stopped in to read it three times, but refrained fom comment because I have not seen or don't remember the article and thought it better to let those who did, or do, go ahead and comment - or even the author.
But, Alas, we are left lonely in th ethroes of gramatical construction, a la website lingo.
So, I'll throw in my two cents worth of ideas...based on what i gather from your post
I would use plastic cap nails with the longer shanks to fasten the foam to the walls, then place furring srtrips over the foam, and use screws long enough to reach through. The furring would hold the foam securely in place, and provide a nailing base for siding.
Using two layers of foam, I don't know if it would be necessary to use a housewrap, but I might use cans of spray foam to seal the edges of the panel foam together
