Working on 1912 craftsman remodeling a living/dining area. I has an original river rock fireplace. The only problem is that is has about 8-10 layers of paint on it. Any recommendations for paint removal? Have tried a couple of different products but have problems getting decent removal in particular from the mortar between the rocks. Anything that will do the trick or is blasting the only option? I’m assuming the latter will affect the appearance and also creates a lead exposure problem. Appreciate any suggestions – thanks.

Brick are often cleaned of paint using ground walnut huls instead of sand for the sandblasting. They are softer and no't etch the surface as bad. I just know this from readinghere, not from personal experience.
With mortar that old, I would expect good odds you would need to re-point after something like this anyway though
