I just read something interesting in the newspaper about IRS audits and how they choose who to go after. Apparently they have a big computer that pinpoints people with unusual tax information. The article mentioned that occasionally some occupations will receive a lot of IRS attention and that in the 1990s DRYWALL CONTRACTORS (along with car dealers) had a disproportionate number of audits. So my question is: what are the rockers doing that the man is chasing after them?

My guess would be paying a lot of people off the books. Its tempting, when the people you're hiring haven't got papers, so arn't going to generate any. And frequently, I imagine, leads to the same sort of abuses that have been going on since Steinbeck wrote "In Dubious Battle", and before.
