I have an existing roof deck for which I need to add a deck railing supported by posts. The roof deck has sufficient slope for drainage and consists of a continuous waterproof membrane, lightweight concrete, and tile. The deck is flashed correctly and there are no water leaks. However, I still need to add the deck railing and posts. What is the preffered technique for attaching the posts to avoid water leaks now that the deck is complete?
My original plan was to drill through the deck into the roof framing and bolt the posts through a self sealing membrane located between the post base and the tile. However I spoke with an iron work (railing) sub-contractor, and he feels that metal post bases should have been embedded in the concrete before the tile went in place. He thinks my idea of attaching through a membrane is flawed and that the deck tile should be removed to embed the metal post bases. I am concerned that this amount of rework in itself could encourage water leaks. Any suggestions?
