I am trying AJS joists/rafters for a semi-flat roof 2 pitch. They will be attaching to the side of an existing building and continuing past the building for 14′ more. Here they will rest atop of newly framed walls. The span is 18′ for the main house and 20′ for the garage, {the extra 14′}. The spacing is 16″ and I was wondering if it would be better to rest the rafters for the existing area on top of a ledger or use hangers and attach them to the face of the 2×12 against the house. The salesman said either way will work but I am leaning towards the hangers.

Salesmen usually don't have hammer calloused hands. I would toenail to the face of the ledger. and add framing anchors or twist strap for extra support. You could use joist hangers but they're going to require a little special attention, notching or blocking to allow the rafter to seat. There is also a hanger called a LSSU in the USP catalogue that will work for you. But I think a toenailed connection should serve you fine
Sounds like he is talking engineered I-joists, not soliod lumber.Top hanging hangers are fine, but seat according to isntructionms or it could develope squeeks from movement. Some guys seat it in a dab of glue in the hanger pocket.

Right sorry, The lssu's will work with I joists. I don't really like them but they'll work. There the ones with wing looking sides, bend one in one out for a skewed joist and they have an adjustable seat for a I joist rafter with web stiffener. Thanks for the catch.
