Geoffrey, I like to use this roll membrane sealer made by wens Corning. It is specifically made for valley and skylight type applications. It has sticky back so you don’t have to nail it. My next choice would be Galvanized sheet metal although it will rust. Meaning more maintaince for you.

*Does the question revolve around putting shingles on a 1/12 roof? If so....don't! The valley will be the least of the problems. Most shingle companies say 4/12 is the lowest with standard exposure. 3/12 witha shortened exposure. And 2/12 with an ice guard type membrane oner the entire deck. A 1/12 brings a whole new line of questions. where's it at? How high? Can ya see it? What's the rest of the roofing? Jeff
*Anything 3/12 or below here can't have asphalt shingles.Windcode here prevents all that mess. Code here says at least two layers of #30 roof felt in valleys. Inspector said he doesn't care about flashing in the valley at all, he just wanted to see two layers of felt. Spent 4 of the most miserable days of my life doing a 4/12 roof last week (helped my brother do his own roof). NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!near the ditch Loving Life...James
*The low slope roof is over a 8' by 11' porch that intersects two intersecting roofs that have a pitch of 8/12. The porch is located at the inside corner of a "L" shaped ranch. The top of the roof is not visible from the street or the yard, maybe the neighbors house. At this time the roof has role roofing that leaks. Being that the slopes are different and the porch roof is in the inside corner, the valley changes directions when it intersects the porch roof. The 8/12 roof has 2-3 layers of asphalt. The two were seperate questions but are on the same roof. Thanks for the responses.
*b TVMDCI would suggest tearing-off the flat roof and removing the first two courses of shingles on each pitched roof. A galvanized pan (not valley) can be nailed to the flat and pitched sections making a neat transition. Then lay glass felt and burn-down granulated modified bitumen. The shingle courses can then be replaced. The modified will outlast the shingles.
*Thanks for the response Bill, this is a big help.
*b TVMDCThanks for your thanks. BTW, be certain to underlay your glass felt 4-6" under the shingle felt and overlay your shingle felt and shingles on top of the modified!Regards,Bill
*James if you don't like 4/12's, you shoulda come and help me with my 12/12. I spent four days last week too, but I can't say they were miserable. For some strange reason, I actually like putting a roof (shingles) on once in a while, but I wouldn't want to do it every day.I suppose I like the change of scenery. Here's a pic of my efforts.blue
*Great looking job Blue. The reason it was so miserable for us was two fold. First, the four helpers we were supposed to have (nephews) didn't show. That left my brother and I. Both of our wives helped as much as they could, and did a great job.Secondly, the outside temp was 106 F or above for those four days, and we did a complete tearoff, and total reroof according to wind code. Every shingle on the roof's edge (total perimeter) from starter course on up had to be glued down. Felt had to have 1 1/2 metal discs nailed down every 10" on starter course edge, and every 12" on overlaps. The middle of each layer had discs every 24". The tear off was rough because we had to hand carry each chunk of old roof down the roof, to the middle of the front side, and toss it into the trailer. There were flimsy metal carport type roofs all over this house, and we couldn't get on them to dump the old shingles/debris. In the heat, this was really rough.Applying the shingles was rough too. Heat can really be a dangerous thing if you don't handle the situation carefully.James DuHamel
*Ouch JAMES! I'd rather wrestle the 12/12 than do what you did!blue

Is the preferred method of constructing a asphalt shingle roof valley with sheet metal or is role roofing OK? All the roofs I see with role roofing in the valley look brittle and cracking.
On low slope roofs of less than 1 in 12, should a membrane be used rather than role roofing?
Thanks
