A recent ‘Breaktime’ article had a suggestion that sash cords and weights could be replaced by ‘ a metal spring device’ and then the weights and cord removed and the cavity filled with expanding foam for a more energy efficient window in an old house. Can someone identify the metal spring device ???

Replaces the pulley with a spring balance.
I have used the Pullman Spring Balances in my old house. The size varies based on the weight of the sash. I found on the larger windows that the Depth Spring units was a little too much to fit.

I really wanted to try them, but when I emaild them about additional info and where I could get some here, I never got an answer to my email.
Guess shipping to Canada is too hard for them, or they cant translate "Yankee" into "Canuck".

Now that I have had the time to look for them, how about this then?

We used something similar on a remodel and they worked well. Don't know how they've held up, but with the temps in the 90's and the humidity around 200%, I bet the windows are left shut anyway.
