A friend of mine is looking into adding a post lift in his garage, the lift is capable of raising a vehicle higher than the bottom chord of his trussed roof. The garage is a simple rectangle 45′ x 30′ (truss spans the 30′) with gable ends.
So the question is:
Can a section of the roof trusses were he needs the extra height be removed and replaced with simple stick framing of the appropriate sized rafters and rafter ties to gain the extra height.
Or would it be better to consult an engineer and have that section of truss redesigned to accommodate the new height?
Thanks

consult an engineer.
even better, consult a truss manufacturer who has engineering services on staff. they could not only design the trusses for "free," but provide them as well. sister them together, remove the sections you don't want and voila!

I think you need a pro.
Thanks for the replies, that is what I told him but he wanted to hear it for the group.
