In all my years of FineHomebuilding subscriptions, I can’t find an article I know I read about how to secure a mantel to a fireplace. I’ve looked everywhere! I remember most of the guidelines, but not the specifics regarding the bolt sizes needed, bolt drill size, etc. My wife wants the mantel hung before Thanksgiving. Can anyone help – either with the month/year of the magazine that contained the article or w/ general information on “how to”?
Thanks! 0917dlj

Can't help on the article, but with some info / pictures could give mounting suggestions.
Describe mantle and what you're mounting to. Pilasters flanking?
Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end.
If your attaching to brick tapcon a 2 by to the brick and hang yor mantel on that.Otherwise more info needed.

Hi there - I've just installed two in my own house using a split cleat system and a modified version of that system. The latter one is stained and therefore could only be fastened by 'hanging on the wall' plus screws in around the inside perimeter adjacent to the fireplace slips - these edges were then covered by stained wood beaded scribe strips (PL adhered - no nails).
In the stained example, I modified (cut pieces of) some joist hangers to mount on the wall above the fireplace with simple corner angles on the back of the mantel to hook into them - this was the 'hanging' system.
Both worked just fine, and kept fasteners to a minimum, although the painted version obviously can deal with more fasteners (plugs and patch).
Good luck - Jeff

Lots of variables.
Are you attaching to framed wall or masonry?
Is this a mantle only or a full FP surround?
what kind of a mantle is it?
Are we all invited to Thanksgiving dinner?
