We are moving to Minnesota (from Arizona!) and I imagine that even guests would like a comfy space to take off winter gear. However, I do not want a front entry garage so a little manipulation would be involved. Does anyone have any suggestions where I might find a floor plan to meet my criteria?

Memory is dim, but I believe that Sarah Susanka discussed just this type of entry in The Not So Big House.
It will depend on the final design, I suppose, but for whatever reason people here in Minnesota tend to not use the front door when they go visiting...maybe it's that Scandinavian humility or something, but they'll go to the back door instead nine times out of ten. :-) It is pretty typical to have a tiled area at the front door, where people can leave snow boots and things.
As already mentioned, Susan Susanka's book probably has some good suggestions (and is a good resource to have on hand anyway.)
