A painter that I work with claims that shellac can be used as a primer for exterior wood trim. I’ve never heard of this application, any comments?

Yes, under some circumstances. Either pigmented or clear. It has good water resistance and is great at sealing oils or resins. Its very good as a barrier layer between otherwise incompatible finishes. But, temperature resistance is not so good. It starts to get soft around 125 degrees. In thin layers, not a big problem. But I'd be careful about applying it too thick or using it in really hot sunny places.
Isn't that the same as the original stinky Kilz?
Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell'em "Certainly, I can!" Then get busy and find out how to do it. T. Roosevelt
nope. The oil based kilz is just that..oil based.
Zinnsers BIN is white shellac..actually shellac with titaniun oxide added for blocking grain/stains..etc.
If it cleans up with alky hol it's a shellac based primer..
if it requires mineral spirits ya got an oil product

Guess I was thinking of the Zinser stuff...that which makes breathing difficult if applied indoors.Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell'em "Certainly, I can!" Then get busy and find out how to do it. T. Roosevelt
man I got wrecked on the old stuff years ago..primed over smoke damage in an office..
wound up driving my truck home with the cap tool boxes open , on both sides! Musta dripped tools all the way home, and never knew it.

Shellac is not used as an overall primer. It is used as a spot primer on knots, nails, etc, to block stains from leaching through. Primer is then applied over before painting.
