Hi all,
Can anyone give me some tips on placing shingles(cedar) around windows and doors.Do I have to double course at the top of the window and door or is there an easier way?I made custom wood casings for some new doors and windows.I didn’t use metal flashing because the casing acts as the flashing.A piece of aluminium would change the appearance of the casing.Do you think this may be a problem.I’ve attached an illustration so you can see what I’m talking about. Thanks very much.

Gaby...
i checked out your sketch of window casing...sure wish i was puter literate enough to illustrate like that with my puter... a real architect nightmare if you ask me.... the thought of not flashing the heads of your windows is suicidal... rot will kill ya in less than 5 years... let alone putting up with wet window sills along the way...
i would consider doing away with the side casing running past the top casing... if you butt it ... you can flash it properly with copper or lead going behind the tyvek house wrap over the window head casing
dont forget to install 30# felt splines behind the side and sill casings to weatherproof the joint between casings and shakes.. caulk will never hold up
good luck...

*EricI know what you mean about nightmare. After I made the casing I looked at it and thought "how am I gonna flash this thing".I'm going to take your advice and butt them.I not quite sure what you mean about the felt behind the casing to weatherproof the joint between casing and shakes(I'm a rookie to renovation).Does the felt go behind the side casing(against the wall),wrap around and come out, then the shakes butt up against the felt.If so,is the felt visible or am I way off.As for the head casing...do I place 1 row of shingles over the flashing? Will I see the flashing behind the shakes through the gaps between them?Should I double coarse the shakes above the head casing? Please get back to me.I'm not very "puter"(good one!!) literate myself but I work with Autocad for my job.I asked a friend if it's possible to put drawings in E-mails and file attachments.Turns out that it's very simple(good thing for me!).That's how I did the sketch. If your interested, see if you can get a hold of Autocad and I could explain it to you(I could send you info to get started sketching).I'm sure you can get many other and more user friendly programs from friends aswell.Hope to here from you soonGaby
