I replaced a couple of asphalt shingles that had blown off, near the peak of my roof last summer. In doing a couple more, recently, I noticed that quite a few of the tabs on other shingles were no longer glued down. I added some roofing cement to those I found, but am now wondering what, if anything, this implies. Shingles worn out (granules look pretty good), cheap shingles, normal wear? These are on the western exposure of a maybe 5 in 12 pitch roof. Lots of sporadic strong winds.
Thanks.

With good quality shingles, once they've had a few good warm sunny days (with the sun shining on that side) they should be stuck for life.
happy?
All they needed was a coupla straight days of 70 degree weather, a little cooler would probably work if the sun stayed on them. What brand? I've only seen this with good brand shingles on extreme slopes, such as mansards, where manu's directions specced a dab o goo under each tab. Call who put them on, do they have a workmanship guarrantee?
I am given to understand that if shingles are applied in sufficiently cold weather, they will not seal promptly. If enough dust gets under them before warm weather comes along, it can prevent proper adhesion.
I have no personal experience with this, so I can't vouch for the validity of the theory.

Another day, another tool.
I've no idea what brand they are, or who put them on. Would guess they've been up there at least 10 years, maybe 20?Thanks for the ideas.Thon
Same problem w/my garage, I chalked it up to cool climate, cheap shingles (I didn't do it, honest)
Grunge on.
The only ones I've seen ever fail to stick eventually were winter installs in west texas, where dust is a fact of life

<The only ones I've seen ever fail to stick eventually were winter installs in west texas, where dust is a fact of life>Well, we've got plenty of dust here, and I'm sure some of it IS from Texas. <G>
I had some shingles blow off our pool house which the previous owners had built for them. When I climbed up to replace them I was surprised to find no tarpaper and that the cellophane strips on the adhesive had NOT been removed!
I asked an "expert" about the adhesive strips and he said that no one removed the cellophane. What about this, and also no tar paper. Could this be a new way to save a few bucks if the owner isn't looking?
no felt seems to be the new rage... ask the big builders / developers...
nobody pulls that cellopane but now there will be a few to come along and say ya gotta..Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming<!----><!----><!---->

There should always be tarpaper underlayment but the cellophane is there to keep the shingles from sticking togeether in storage and shipmewnt. It serves no purpose whatsoever upon instalation and is a waste of time to remove. It is intended to remain on the shingles

I've never seen felt not used around here, except on the occasional DIY job.

(a) bad shingles
(b) bad shingles
