I have a basement door with a very narrow stile (I think that is what the vertical section of the door is called) such that a normal 2 3/8 inch backset deadbolt lock will not work (the hole for the lock will overlap the window in the door). The normal home centers like Lowes, HD, etc. do not carry any nonstandard locksets – what a suprise. Before I do a major search for such an item, I thought I would tap into the braintrust here for info: a) does a short backset lockset exist, and b) where would I go about finding one?
Thanks,
Chuck C

I am 99% sure Schlage makes a 1 1/2" backset. Check with your local quality locksmith or a lumberyard/Schlage dealer.
*Schlage has online customer service at:http://www.schlagelock.com/main/customerservice.htm
*I'm 99% sure Schlage doesn't make an backset shorter than 2-3/8" for their deadbolts. I believe you could get a door bolt with a shorter center. A slide bolt would be another interior only option.joe d
*Thanks for the replies - I will check out Schlage dealers locally. Joe, I want to use a double keyed deadbolt lock because of the glass pane inset in the door - a sliding bolt mounted on the interior isn't going to supply any more security since the glass pane can easily be broken.
*Baldwin Model No. 6870 Mortise Deadlock with No. 6042 strike - It has a 1-1/2" backset and the overall case is 2-1/2" x 5 1/2". Yes, I know it is more work to install.Jeff
*Chuck,Is there anyway you could install a normal backset deadbolt to catch the top jamb. I know it might look a little funny but I thought since it's a basement door appearance may not be an issue.Don
