We are building a home this spring and are unsure of what type of siding to use. The style of the home is best characterized as a modern farmhouse. My preference would be cedar shingle but the labor cost is extremely high. Any ideas for alternatives? I would like to know what people think of the vinyl siding called Cedar Impressions. Thanks in advance for your comments and/or suggestions.

Urseep, the cedar impressions is one of the nicer vinyl sidings. I've actually been thrown off at first glance by them. they look pretty good for a vinyl and the installation would definitely be less expensive. also lower maintenance.

Nothing is impossible...It just hasn't been done yet.
there is a product on the market that has cedar shingles attached to a ply backing, about 2x4 sheets. goes up quick. any good, don't know. saw it advertized in a couple places and i believe in FHB

How about rough-cut hemlock with a milled batten? the look is american gothic, put on a good solid-color oil-based stain, and design a simple window and door trim, nice, and not too expencive. Use vynl at the absolute last resort it's so ugly, so unreal, and let's face it in 20 years it'll have to be replaced. Good luck.
I recently got prices from Michingan prestain, and they were real competitive. I can barely buy shakes from my supplier for what they charge for shakes, mounting them on the 1/4" backer and flooding them with stain. Check them out.
