I am looking for help in trimming my shirtboard for the inside basement stairway that will be carpeted. I bought oak veneered shirtboard from Menards [a building supply box store and probably a mistake?] It is 9 1/2″ wide by 7/16″ and sticks up above the upper floor base molding about 2 1/4″. If I cut the top of the board to match the height of the basemolding the exposed edge will be the pressboard. Also since the basemolding is 1/2″ and the shirtboard is 7/16″ there is another exposed bad edge. Any suggestions on how to hide these bad edges would be greatly appreciated.
I am just about a total novice at this and am attempting to trim out my new construction house.
Thanks for the help.

Get some veneer edge band and apply that to the cut edges.
Mitre the skirt over and around to die back into the floor. Run the base to that.
Assuming the skirt board you have is square edged.
edit. Or, mitre the skirt bd before you get up to the top tread, thus making it shorter on the floor. Still have to return it or veneer it-but it won't be as high in relation to the basebd.

Thanks for the help.
I moved the skirtboard down the stairs a little and can get it to match up with the base molding. Just had to slid it down about 2 inches. The base will go around the corner more, but it should look OK. I did the same at the basement floor to get the board to match up to the height of base and should be OK down there too. I think it will work just fine. I don't know exactly where the skirtboard should or shouldn't start and end, but I think it will work.

J, depending on the look of the base, staircase and the rest of the style of the house-put that skirt wherever you think it looks best. I've seen many different configurations, most of which were the result of some change in elevation or direction. Never worked with a veneered skirt though. You have a dig. camera? Take a picture and post it here.A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.
