I’ve read the Breaktime messages on and off for years, have been thoroughly entertained, but never have I had to post a message and ask for help. Now that has changed, so allow me to describe the situation. A small cottage has a bathroom addition in a small (8×8) bumpout from the cottage, with a shed roof that has a skylight. It leaks, not inside the bathroom, but instead the water has found its way between the glass and steel frame. It then runs out on top of the flashing, underneath the rubber roof, but on top of the asphalt shingles. This little bathroom has four layers of shingles on it. First, cedar shingles on top of skip sheathing. Then two layers of asphalt, and finally a rubber top layer. This has gone for enough time to rot out half of the framing where the roof joins the outside wall. (I have discovered this because what started out as a rotted cornerboard and trim progressed to a rotted mudsill replacement and then to this). I don’t know the brand of skylight but there are screws on the outside frame so that the sides, top and bottom can be removed. I’d like to somehow fix the skylight in place instead of replacing it, reroof up to the skylight, and call it a day. Obviously, this is my own house instead of a job. Any suggestions?
