I am building a refreshment building at a golf course and I am planning to put it on a pad. I don’t have a great deal experience with concrete but here is what I’m planning based on the research that I have done. The slab will be 10′ by 10′ , 6″ thick with mesh and the entire perimeter will dug deeper to form a 12″ by 12″ footing or grade beam around the outside. This will reinforced with rebar and the entire slab will have 8″ of 3/4 gravel underneath. There will also be 4″ perferated pipe around the base of the slab to take water away. Is this good enough? Will I have to compact the gravel or will the wieght of the slab take care of that? As well, the building is unheated and I do live in a cold climate.
Thanks, Gary

Yes you will have to compact the gravel. I would use crushed stone instead. (it also has to be compacted.
Make sure you excavate all the organic material as well before you place the granular material and you should be fine.

Gabe: Thanks for the asvice on the slab. I hit the wrong button on your message and your profile came up. I'm also from the great white north (as well as earth ), and I'm grain fed- thanks for the support and the advice . GaryD
You're most welcome.

Gabe,
As THE resident expert on crete, wouldn't you say that a 6" slab with a thickened perimeter is a tad bit of overkill for a 10' x 10' concession shack?
Maybe necessary for Kansas so it won't blow away....
Excellence is its own reward!
Yes but that wasn't the question. I don't know the rationale for the 6 inch slab but it wouldn't be the first time that I have done as small a footprint as this refreshment stand and was specified to pour a 6 inch reinforced slab.
Gabe
Piffin,
I thought of the same point as you, but when thinking about the small size of the slab, I realized Gary will still only need 2.55 yards for slab and footer. If the readymix company has a 4 yard minimum or something like that, why not make it 6".

makes sense!
Labour all the same to form and pour.
besides - excellence is a habit that's hard to break.

Gary, FYI, Gabe is probably the resident expert on your slab construction.
