any experience out there using slate tiles on a house exterior? How difficult are they to apply and can they be used low as a moisture barrier on the outside of the concrete foundation? We were also thinking of bringing the slate up to cover several vertical exterior elements. Also, can slate roofing tiles be used on a curved roof vs. curved standing seam.

WOW! This is weird. I saw my very first slate exterior home today. I was driving through Chagrin Falls and there it was. Thought it was neat but I don't know anything about them.

*A first for me too...Slate is great for curved roofs...That's it for me.If you have the money for slate, you definitely have an architect to spec all this for you...Near the stream,J
*I've seen them used like shingles as exterior cladding. They were hung with nails and they were the same thickness from end to end, not wedge shaped like wood shakes. Two nail holes per piece, lapped about 4".Seems to me this method of attatchment would be better than adhesive, at least for the stated purpose. While slate is not very pourous, the installation--not the individual slate pieces--would have high permeability. This would mean the slate would be best if used for shedding water only, rather than any thought of using it as a moisture barrier.
