dcowan: I'm interested in why you specified N. Cal. Is it because you are looking for someone to install it? Or, because you anticipate some problem because of weather.
If the latter, rest assured you will not have a problem with the slate. Depending, of course, upon species of stone used and installation method. You can have a slate floor, interior or exterior for around $7/sf, installed.
If the former, how far north? I live in SLO county, approx 120 mi. south of Monterey. Unless you're in Weed, or somewhere, what do you say?
Have trowel, will travel.
*If you have a Home Base or Home Depot near you they stock an ungauged 12"x12" Slate Tile that is only $1.75 or $2 a sq. ft.. It is really tough stuff and easy to install at a cost well under Rich's estimate here where I live, more like $4/sq. ft. installed. Just make sure you have a sufficient subfloor under--
*The Home Depot stuff is kinda rough. To upgrade to a better grade, much flatter (gauged), will only cost a but more and may save some headaches... At least we felt it was worthwhile, but our out-of-pocket labor costs were zero.On durability, slate is relatively soft and can be scratched by dragging something metal across it. So don't drag something metal across it. Rich, can you post a picture of a finished floor?
*Andrew d: I'd love to post pics--have alot of 'em--but I am hardware challenged. I guess I find someone with a scanner, et al.

thanks for the speedy reply
i live in the eureka area on the northcoast (about as far north as weed, but on the coast!!
that's a hell of a commute to lay a floor!

Eureka is a nice area. Still have the Vista Del Mar? Think of it as a working vacation. Heck, I have traveled to AZ, Calaveras, San Jauquin Valley, lots of places, just to work/visit.
Try as I may, I have not been able to extract myself from living on the Pacific coast. Why would I want to? Because there are some way beautiful places in this country worth more than just a visit. But, I always come back to the big water.
*Kinko's.
*The Atlantic's pretty big, too. But the real attraction of the East Coast, specifically the D.C.-Boston corridor, is the cities.
