This is probably a Tavern question, but I don’t have access and would prefer to keep it that way.
Regardless, I saw this snake on the road last night.
I was driving on a two lane road that typically has a decent amount of traffic during the day, but it was deserted at 9:00 PM. I noted that the snake that I almost ran over seemed very long, so I backed up to take a closer look.
What caught my attention (and prompted me to take a pic) was the colors and pattern of the skin. It does not seem like a garter or rat snake to me, but I’m by no means a snake expert (or even a snake novice).
Anyone recognize it?

Gee it looks like our theft deterrent system. DW shot this on our front porch last summer. Makes me rethink about all the piles of scrap lumber around the house. I ran over one with the lawn mower a few years back. Did not see it until afterward, thought it had thrown belt. Not as honking big as this one.For those who have fought for it Freedom has a flavor the protected will never know.
that one looks more likw a timber rattler or diamond back...
no matter... they're all good eating...

It's late for me to see this, and I have to go to bed. I'll check tomorrow, as you really have good pictures. Given that copperheads are really rare snakes, as are most American pit vipers, it's likely something else. But we'll see.
Looks like a copperhead, but at any rate, that's one bad #### looking snake.
Sure does look like the copperhead in this link.

This link has a photo comparison to snakes that are often mistaken for copperheads.
