Has anyone ever seen this? Riding to work I noticed heavy black staining on many roofs along one peticular road. About 25 out of 150 or so roofs were stained. It was primarily on the north side of the houses and it seemed to be mostly 3 tab shingles. It looked almost like soot or oil stains, sometimes a little bit and sometimes quite a lot.

Didn't need an exact adress, but the general part of the country says things about a problem and it's diagnosis.
For instance, in Florica, it is almost certainly mildew stain.
If you have industrial plants upwind, there can be chemical staining.
Big hardwoods spread lots of spores and pollen.
There can be a combination.
If these are more on north side, and you have a fairly humid climate, I vote for mildew.

I lived in a neighborhood like that. Guy had an oil well in his backyard and it kept getting out of control. The county shut him down.
Roof algae, lichen, mold, whatever. Once in a neighborhood, airborne it will spread. Zinc strips tucked under the shingles left exposed to leach during rain will stop it. There is a cleaner. Piffin knows this stuff, he'll set you straight.

Almost certainly algae growing on the roofs. Look closely and you will notice clear areas near any sort of galvanized fitting on the roof -- the zinc from the galvanized iron kills the algae.
