I have a set of stairs that lead down to a walk out basement. The upper hallway has #1 Maple hardwood floors and the basement will have brown acid-dyed concrete. I am looking for suggestions for stair flooring other than carpet. I would like something that I could sweep. What have you see that looks good?

Why not go with hardwood treads and varnish them?

Great idea! Okay sure it is the obvious one. What are your thoughts one whether or not to add the hardwood runners down the sides. Currently both sides have drywall that is relatively straight down the sides that drops inside the stair treads.
Maple or something different?

Personally, I like painted skirts and risers with hardwood trim and treads.
I know the drywall "looks" straight, but Hardwood treads butted up to drywall is a gappy caulkfest.
Plywood is preferred for the skirts and risers(more stable than solid wood) but the world is your oyster when it comes to hardwood treads. Birch and Maple if you like the lighter colored woods, or you can get into the exotics if you pockets are deep. Stained birch or maple looks pretty much the same as exotics to most, if done properly or professionally.May neighbors respect You, and troubles neglect You.
