Any advice on laying out and building a winding staircase. It’s not new construction…Adding access to an attic space in a raised range.
I’ve layed out and built a bunch of stairs before, but in discussing this option with the homeowner it occured to me that I’ve never framed a winder before. I have an idea as to how I’m going to approch it, just looking for some input form someone whose actully built one. Thanks.

Check with the local code officer 90% of what you need to know will be in the codes.
the rest you should be able to figger out.

This http://www.arcways.com/IRC2003.pdf has some info on laying out winders.
As far as attic access, are the floor joists in the attic up to the task? Even if you are not gonna pass any inspections you still probably want at least 2x8s. 2x6s would definately be border line depending on the spans.
