I need one tapered stairhanger bolt for joining two sections of a handrail about 4″/4 1/2″ inches long with 3/8″ dia threads tapering to the solid nonthreaded 7/16″ dia section rod in the middle.
Each end is threaded for a nut. Can’t find anything on the web.
I know I have one somewhere as I recall seeing it sometime in the wayback history but finding something like that now when you need it is impossible.
All thread in 7/16ths isn’t going to happen and one old hole is that dia. 3/8ths is going to have to work if I can’t locate the actual part.
I thought maybe, perhaps, remote possibility, someone may have a spare they would be willing to sell.
Thanks.
be hoping to roll a seven

Buy some 3/8" threaded rod and have the middle turned down by a machinist?
Let's not confuse the issue with facts!
Ya, got some 3/8 thread rod today.
The middle of the bolt would need to be 7/16 with the threaded 3/8s tapering to each end. Hole in one end of the original rail is a tight 7/16ths.
Was hoping to simplfy matters but I can make it work.

It's alright, I ain't building a work of art.
Old curved staircase I took out of an old victorian many years ago and finally getting to the point where I could put it up.
I ended up removing the first step and the top four from it as the vicky had high ceilings and I've a storey and a half. All in pieces but I did have a numbering system back then, kind of. bwaa! be puzzled at what you did years later
Had to add a 10 inch piece of rail to the top of the banister before she curled 90 to make the rail for a balcony. Rail piece profile's not a perfect match as it was cut from the original top rail but good enough.
Using everything I'd saved from back then with no balusters left and like a footlong long piece of rail remaining.
Maybe the missing newel post ball will come out of that.

Yeah but, ain't it grand? I love that shid. BTW, use roman numerals, carving an 8 is a PITA with a chisel.

Ya, just wanting to match the pre-exsisting and have it accessible later is all.
be is that toejam on that toenail?

Can't believe I went ahead and used the threaded rod only to find the bolt the next day.
Here's a pic of what I was talking about.
be no I ain't swapping it out once a deed is done.

Looks like FUN! ;)
is there a reason it has to be fat in the middle(like us) ???
It don't show so as long as it works, who cares???

Besides beer and donuts I'd be guessing.
7/16 fitting tight in a 7/16 hole in the rails. Maybe the taper to 3/8s dia was for ease of getting that star nut started on the stairbolt as a small rectangular opening is chiseled into the underside of the rail a couple inches out from the intersection then later filled with a wooden plug.
The hole and bolt run into this providing the access point to slip the nut on to the bolt. Close quarters.
Got to wondering if the stairbuilders had a special wrench tool for those starnuts. Prying those tight with a screwdriver makes for a good hack job on the sides of the square opening.

I would swear I have seen such a tool. Looks like sort of a crescent with a handle on one end and a hook (that engages the bolt slots) on the other.
Maybe on ebay someone would have that particular tool? Maybe just grind one up out of a piece of steel?

Ya, but don't need one now as I did the last hurrah on putting together the rails.
