Sam,
As a rule, I use stick nailers for nailing sticks and coils for nailing sheathing. I just feel I have more control with a stick when nailing joists and studs. Coilers need less reloading thus saving time when nailing sheathing.
*I've used both stick and coil and several different brands/models. I finally came to the conclusion that nowadays they are all pretty good. Which one is best is the one that seems to "fit" the user. So, I don't get real passionate about any of them; after all a nailer is just an automated hammer; and how excited can you get about a refined rock on a stick? Get the one that fits you.
*Frame with a stick nailer...lighter than a coil nailer which makes a big difference if you frame everyday.....and sheath with a coil nailer. You dont feel the weight as much if you sheat your walls before you lift them....with the way you hold you gun pointing towards the ground you wont feel the weight. Plus you go through alot of sixes when sheating, therefore less reloading. Most framers I know use their guns this way.
*I frame everyday and my guys fight over the coil for everything. They like the fact that the reload is less and it's better for sheathing but it also toe-nails better.
*Very pleased with my Senco stick nailer for rehab work due to its ability to fit into tight spaces. Seems like the general themes here are "depends on how you'll use your nailer" and "depends on which you prefer."
