Neighbor’s house in the Maryland side of DC said he has these 3×5 pieces of very thick AL foil with a hole for a wire going though the middle of the foil running through the ceiling joists in his late 1940’s early 50’s rancher on a slab/partial basement.
Does anyone know the purpose of these ‘garlands’ laid between the joists?
He thinks it may have been something to make any squirrels that got into the attic space move to the next house because it was just too unfriendly.
Any ideas or anyone see something like this?

I was before the mobile tinfoil hat was developed. For those who have fought for it Freedom has a flavor the protected will never know.
No, I haven't seen it, but was just remembering all the people who used to wrap rabbit ears in al. foil and drape foil and wire it to the rabbit ears. May be for some other purpose totally!

I'd bet that it's a antenna for those big old radios what sits in the middle of the floor.
They had AM stations and also Short Wave bands on the backlighted dial.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming
WOW!!! What a Ride!
Forget the primal scream, just ROAR!!!
Sounds to me like it may have supported some sort of insulation in the past.
