What is the difference between spackle and mud (joint compound)?
My friend does commerical finish work is showing me how to tape and mud.
I asked him and his only response was that drywallers use mud and painter use spackle.

one thing,, there is an exterior spackle..no exterior mud as far as I know

If spackle was a brand name it is no longer one.
I found DAP Spackle (many variations), Sheetrock Brank Spackling Compound, White Lighting Spackle, Custom Building Products Spackle, adn Red Devil Spackle.

That is what I am after, what is the different characterics and applications of spackle vs drywall mud.
Perhaps a regional diff.
As far as I've ever heard, always mud. Spackle is for nail hole filling. This from NW Ohio.

I see you mention White Lightning spackle. Have you bought any lately? I have had so much trouble finding it here on Long Island, and figured they stopped making it, or stopped marketing it around here.
No, I was just trying to find different brands. But I was not sure if it was a brand or maybe just "style" by DAP or someone else.
So I googled on that and found other styles and it appears that it is a owned by Sherwin Wiliams, but not real sure. But some White Ligthing products show up on the SW web site. So you might try their stores.

Seriously, Spackle is a plastice vinyl filler intended for filling holes and cracks so as top be non-shrinking, smooth, and paintable in one coat. Since it is packed into a cavity, the bonding or adhesive properites are less important than taping or finishing mud whioch is applied over the smooth surface of the rock.
