If I record a show and the replay shows a perfect picture, but the sound is “rrrrrrr click grrrrr brr bkkkkk” does that imply the VCR, the tape, both, or can’t tell from the info provided? After about half hr of this the sound came in perfectly. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, but the picture is always ok. Might not be bad for Monday Night Football or something, but kinda sucks for a show with lotsa dialog.

I'd start by cleaning the heads, but the tracking is probably just off a little bit. Seems like the units with the "auto tracking" feature suffer from this after heavy use. Had to pitch mine a while back because the auto tracking went on the fritz and there was no way to adjust it manually. Does it do the same thing with regular movies and other tapes?
*Try using a long q-tip or sumthin, dipped in alcohol.Reach into the deck(or pop the cover-easy), and clean not only the head-but the capstans and pinchrollers as well. The head(big round shiny thingy) has little ports around its middle, these are the heads themselves. Cleaning the capstans(posts) and pinchrollers is just as important. Most times, this will take care of any intermittant tracking problems. Head cleaner tapes rarely do as much as you would like, but for small problems, they're fine. In some cases(abrasive, dry tapes) they can ruin it.Good luck, MikePS: There's no such thing as a stupid question!!PPS: Please unplug unit before servicing!!!
