I am newly returned to the home building world, and rapidly learning how much I have missed in the industry. When I was a kid, our house sub-floor was tongue-n-groove 2×6 glued and nailed at a 45 degree angle to the floor joists. Is this no longer used? Or is there a good reason not to use it?
Thanks!

Faster to use 3/4 inch plywood faster is a lot when labor costs are considered.
3/4inch OSB (tongue and grove) is becoming pretty much standard on price sensitive homes and acceptable as long as there is no intention to put hardwood floors down..
In fact, I would like to put down hardwood floors, in some areas, and tile in others. I suspect the tile is out with the wood floors - too much movement? Do they still sell T&G 2x6's? The house will be single story over a basement in the southern Colorado area in the foothills.

I dont know of anyone that puts down 1x6 T&G as a subfloor anymore. We use T&G panels ( 4'x8' size, whether its ply, osb, or something of that nature). Have put carpet, tile, hardwood, etc. over the top of them.
Look into a product called Advantech. Lots of people seem to like it.

Thanks for the response. I am a little out of touch and that is one of the primary reasons why I am using this forum, to get an education! It just seems that T&G plywood wood not last long before you get a lot of squeaks and creaks. I would use glue and screw, though. I would like to lay tile in some areas, and hardwood in others. Using the T&G ply is good enough for this? This is for my own home! Not for someone else.
Thanks!

Advantech is the most stable, flat, water-resistant, squeak-free subfloor you can get when coupled with PL Premium polyurethane construction adhesive. Use screws if you want, just don't use sheetrock screws because the heads will break off. 8d ring shank nails are the usual fasteners, or 8d screw shank nails if you're hand nailing. 1x6 boards expand and contract with moisture. All those little boards vs. one 4x8 tongue and groove panel? Advantech is the way to go.

P.S. I'm not a sales rep. I just like the stuff.
Thanks, Mike, for the feedback and the info. I am reading the info on it right now from the website you sent. I am certainly not against saving time and effort. It will be my last house, so it has to be the best.
