Replacing carpet with 3/4″ hardwood. Under the carpet is a very solid old maple floor, some lineoleum and solid subfloor (doug fir planks—old house).
I can’t do 1/2 or 3/4 inch plywood then 3/4″ flooring—makes the floor way to high. What about 1/4″ plywood for a nice flat surface, then nailing and stapling through flooring, through 1/4 and into original subfloor? Most manufacturers require 3/4 inch plywood beneath flooring.
Engineered flooring is an option, but I’d prefer 3/4″ for my historic house.
Thanks. B.

You can fasten the new floor directly over the hardwood floor or directly over a plank subfloor. You need to run your flooring at right angles to the base (flooring or subflooring) and the base should be fairly even. I would not use 1/4 as a subfloor unless it was extremely well glued and fastened.
you cant refinishs the maple floor. 2+3=7
One clarification: after years of remodeling, the current room is a mix of flooring---some old maple, some lineoleum---can't refinish. I'm worried that the mix of materials makes for an uneven application of hardwood---that's why I wanted to explore 1/4 to create a single flat, even surface.
