I’m new to the discussion board — and an intermediate-level diy’er. I’m replacing 90′ of wood fence (the posts finally rotted out on the original wood picket fence built in 1922). I’ll be putting in a fence with two feet of painted redwood lattice at the top. In order to prime this, I’m thinking of making a 3’x9′ trough and dipping, then hanging the lattice (instead of hand painting or spraying). Any comments or suggestions?
Thanks for any advice.
P.S. I posted this elsewhere — probably in the wrong topic — apologies if this is a repeat.

Stain, not paint. With paint, you have a film-building binder which will eventually peel. Check type of fastener used to secure lattice strips to each other and consider adding to them if you want the lattice to last longer. Don't use white over redwood or you'll have a pink fence, at some point.

Thanks for the quick answer. I understand that there are primers formulated to block the stains from redwood (I had a picket fence installed three years ago, made from redwood, primed and painted white with no stains).
The lattice will be the standard stuff from home depot, cut to 2x8 and mounted on a 2x4 frame.
Any feedback is appreciated.

Yes there are, Olympic for instance makes a good one. But it's not when your finished that paint is a question, it's when it starts to fail later on. Lattice is fussy enough without having to scrape it, and if you want white Cabots makes a great fence stain. OK that's all I'll do to try and convince you - good luck.

If you must paint, I believe Pittsburgh makes a primer called 'Storm Plate 90 (?)' which is very good on cedar.

Jeff, Thanks for your comments and the link. I'll look into the white stain. Maybe I should use plastic lattice (no-one's going to be looking that closely) and cedar instead of redwood.
