I am looking for design feedback/suggestions in constructing a frame or support for a granite slab. The slab measures 36″ by 72″ and about 1.5″ thick. I’m concerned uneven support or insufficient support could lead to cracking or failure of stone. Countertops likely receive support over most of their surface, how much overhang or unsupported stone is acceptable on a table? I’m estimating the slab to weigh approx. 400 lbs. A post on Knots led to a suggestion I post here as well. Thanks in advance for your feedback, Bill ([email protected])

Bill,
The countertops we've done in stone all had a 3/4" plywood base, concealed by a bullnose edge detail.
What is your edge detail? What is the table top height - 30" off the floor, approx.?
If your edge is rough hewn or doesn't have a half-round detail to hide the ply base, I would suggest that perhaps you could cut a sheet of 3/4" ply at 30" x 66", let's say ... paint the plywood edge black for increased invisibility, let your slab edge hang over 3" all around ... voila!

*Bill,We installed a granite top on the customer's table base. We beefed-up the base with some poplar under the top. Mainly the stretchers. No Plywood. That was 3 years ago, no callback so far.Jon
