tar paper or not, that is the question..

I am ready to begin shingle istallation (cedar shingles over advantech) on the sides of my newley constructed shed (unheated- storage variety) should I use a tar paper under the shingles or just shingle over the advantech?

I would use tar paper. For the minimal cost you will incur, it will be much better for the structure.
If you don't, any water that gets past the shingles (and some will) has nothing to keep it from soaking in to the sheathing. Advantech is good stuff, but it's not supposed to stay wet.

Thanks for the reply john
Just for kicks, I put Tyvek under some shingles on my storage shed to determine What the results would be. I have read all the warnings about not doing so as the Tyvek disolves. I just want to see for myself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good Idea to put tarpaper under the shingles.
Tyvek doesn't dissolve, but the tannins in the cedar act as surfectants and allow water to migrate through the tyvek. An unheated storage shed probably has enough ventilation that it won't make any difference. In a heated, sealed, insulated house it could be an issue.
Durn it, here I thought I could answer it to my satisfactiion. Actually I had the tyvek leftover and didn't have the tarpaper!>G<
Well, if the shed disintegrates let us know.
It hasn't in the last 30 days, but I will keep a close watch!>G<

In recognition of this, you have been awarded the privilege of asking as many questions here as you like! (And maybe even getting answers a lot less silly than this one....)
LOL.
This is one of those questions that comes around regularly here and provokes a moderate amount of dissent between opposing camps of opinion; if you want to see long discussions of the whys and wherefores on both sides, use the 'advanced search' function which you will find at the very top of the message list in the left-hand frame.
FWIW, I wouldn't roof even a duck-house without using felt under the shingles. And the cedar shakes and shingles institute specifies alternating courses of felt with the courses of shakes/shingles...which is a pretty clear indication that that's the way to go.
