tar paper under 4″ oak floor?
getting ready to nail down my first 3/4 oak floor. i have seen that old floors had a layer of tar paper [or rosen paper]. is there any advantage to this? floor will be stapled to 3/4 advantech that is pl glued and over a conditioned basement. i cant see why it would help squeaks because if i understand this right the squeak you here is the nail moving up and down.another question is what is the easy way to fasten the board under the toe kick on cabinets,i can’t see how even a finish nailer can toenail under there. how about just gluing with pl on that last board? thanks larry
hand me the chainsaw, i need to trim the casing just a hair.

There can be several reasons for floor sqeaks.
One of them is wood/wood betwen finish flooring and subfloor, which tarpaper or resin paper will prevent.
another is wood/wood between individual pieces of flooring which good nailing will help prevent.
Steel/wood squeaks come from the flooring sliding up and down on the fastener. There are a multitude of reasons why this can happen. poor placement, delaminating ply subfloor, movement, etc
the other Q - I try to lay the flooring first, then the cabs.
but I have used const adhesive to tack that first or last piece in place, cutting out the tarpaper there.
BTW, you do have the cabs shimmed up 3/4" don't you?

i can't belive i thought ahead far enough to make the cabs 36 3/4 .i usally think of that about the time you lay the floor and go oh no, time to lay another countettop on! so do you lay 15lb or 30lb? on a roof i only want 30 but looks like 15 would be ok for this use. once the paper is down do you worry about the staples hitting floor joist or just start nailing?just for a laugh i bought a new bostich stapler and it gives air comsumption for 60 fastners per minute. if i swing that hammer 60 times in 1 minute how much air my compressor needs will be secondary to me laying on the floor gasping for air and holding my arm! thanks larryhand me the chainsaw, i need to trim the casing just a hair.

The paper was primarily used to keep dust from working down through the board sheathed sub-floor below and cold drafts blowing up. We don't often use boards for sub-floors these days, but the practice lingers. Part of it, is that the paper makes a clean surface to work on. Using "tar paper" won't help with that, you'll end up marking the flooring material, plus it smells for awhile.
