I need to add a tee to existing 1 inch buried black gas pipe to add a tankless water heater to an exterior wall. The pipe is pretty rusted, 55 years old, do I have a chance in hell of cutting the pipe and then using a Home Depot-rented pipe threader and getting descent threads ? What would you do ? Attempt to thread it or run new black (or the insulated green black pipe) or some flexible insulated stainless tubing ?
thanks

...pretty rusted...
...is not a technical description - if a significant amount of the 'meat' is gone, replace it -
if it just looks nasty, cut and thread it -
I'd try to thread it - what do you have to lose? a few bucks on the threader rental -
good luck -
I believe underground joints in gas pipe are welded...
replace it..
find a new place above ground to tap in...
