I’m planning to install an apron front “farmhouse sink”. I will tile it in and use a wall mounted faucet. I am wondering if I can lay tiles directly over the back portion, to cover the faucet holes, or do I need to run my backerboard across this area before setting the tiles in thin-set adhesive?
Any suggestions appreciated.

Thinset mortar doesn't bond very well to glazed porcelian. If this is the finish of the sink you have, you could set your backerboard in epoxy resin and tile on that. If you have a real, viterous china sink you can bond the tile directly to that. In either case, you will have to scuff up the glazed finish of the sink.
*I have an SS sink installed with a wall mounted faucet. I put the sink in backwards, with the holes toward the front and floated over them for the tile (with expanded metal lath). That way I had enough deck room to tile the front and the faucets cover more of the sink.
