I got some free granite tile, 12×12 and an planning to install it on my countertop. The standard for tile install on countertops is:
3/4″ pt plywood
hardibacker or rock bedded on thinset and screwed to ply
possible a waterproof membrane (Redguard?)
thinset or modified thinset to set tile
thinnest grout joint (1/8″)
sealant
Your comments on this method of install and my questions below.
Questions:
1. I am always hesitant to use pt indoors because of offgassing and leaching of preservatives. I’d be even more hesitant to use it in a kitchen. Comments or alternatives?
2.I understand the thinset between the ply and hardiboard is to minimize any possible deflection. Comments?
3.What about a waterproof membrane? Has anyone used “Redguard”? I understand it stinks. For how long? We have problems with asmatha and environmental allergies in my house.
4. What thinset or adhesive to use for granite? Mixes thinset seems to be preferred but what about modified adhesives (“Omnigrip’?). Again the deflection issue seems important. The more flexibility or shock absorbing undertile bed that a modified adhesive would give seem to make more sense than a rigid mortar bed. If bag thinset is used, what about additives? What kind and preferred brand?
5. Recommendations on sealant?
Thanks for being able to benefit from the pool of knowledge.

U need a thinset made for natural stone to aviod bleed through. I have used reg thinset and got the bleed through but It does go away after a while.
Make sure u use insanded grout and unsanded caulking in the joint between the horizontal and verticle surfaces. if u are making a granite tile backsplash as well.
