Just a couple of questions for you all:
1) Are drwall screws ok to use to screw the concrete board down with?
2) Is there any reason to use thin-set vs dry-set motar when laying the concrete board down?
Thanks.

Drywall screws are NOT a good idea. There are specific screws for this application.
Thinset contains additives that make it have a greater bond and elastcity over dry set.

Drywall screws are called drywall screws, cuz that's all thy're good for.
You're gonna have a bag of thinset to install the tiles anyway, so why would you want to buy a different product just for the backerboard?
There is an excellent website devoted to tile questions. Try johnbridge.com

Greetings Bob, Welcome to Breaktime
Similar questions have been addressed here on Breaktime a number of different times in the past.
If you scroll down in the lower left corner of your screen there is a search function that will take you to previous threads dealing with whatever you type in the search bar.
If you type in 'tile installation', 'thin set', or other keywords of the subject matter you'll get a good supply of data from those old threads.
Cheers
