While removing existing sheet flooring in my kitchen/dining room area to install ceramic tile, I discovered an interesting problem. The home is on a concrete slab, and the kitchen level was built up with 2 layers of 3/4″ plywood. The dining room is unique in that the concrete slab is raised up to the top of the sill plates, with makes it level with the top of the plywood in the kitchen.
I am concerned about installing tile over this joint between dissimilar substrates. Would an uncoupling membrane (Ditra, etc.) work here to prevent the tile from cracking?
Any other ideas for handling this?

A membrane might work, but I would try to find a way to put a tile joint right over the floor joint, and then caulk it with matching grout caulk.
