I’m remodling a basement and need to replace the 30yo sheet vinyl flooring with ceramic tiles. The vinyl seems very well adhered and the basement is dry. What are my options for installing the tile? My inclination is to put down 1/4″ durock with mastic and tapcons or ramsets–is there a better way?
Thanks,
Mike

Hey Mike, why not use a little elbow grease and save some money and rip up the old vinyl. It's not as hard as it seems, no matter how well it's glued done. There are products out there that help remove the glue, and use a floor scrapper. Another option would be to tile over the vinyl. If's it on a slab, which I'm assuming because you said it's in a basement, and solid, you can skim over it with underlayement patch. This will also help if there are any pits in the floor. Then go to town.
Good Luck.
*Yea Mike,id rip off the vinyl, cost you a little time but you'd save the money on the mat'l.
*Ok, so what if I said part of the basement will be carpeted, so I really wouldn't mind building up the height a little? Plus today I found two layers of vinyl, and don't want to deal with it if it's asbestos. Can I use construction adhesive under the durock, or should I use something else? Thanks for your help.Mike
*Mike,No matter what you use to attach the durock to the vinyl, its only gonna last as long as the vinyl adheases to the concrete. If you really dont want to remove the vinyl then I guess attaching the durock to the concrete with a ramset, tapcons and mastic will work for ya. shouldnt be a problem just make sure the fastener heads are below the surface of the durock so the tile wont crack but you know that already. good luck i hope this helps. I got my own quagmire going with the wood floors im refinishing right now...
*Durock, nor any other backerboard, is meant to be installed over a concrete slab. Period. You have three options:Remove the vinyl and adhesive. Float a mortar bed. Use a self-leveling compound.Get a copy of the TCA Handbook..and read it.Dave
*Thanks for the advice Dave--now where would I get the TCA handbook? That sounds like something I could use.
