Are u a frontie or a backie ?Seems like most pics in FH are backies. I guess im old school and i wear my leather apron in the front . After about ten years and i ready to upgrade and trying to decide which way to go.Can a fellar every change.?
Id say i spend half my time in a belt framing and knocking around and other half trim.Never been a guy to carry half a ton of stuff on me.And when i trim i still carry a tri-square(combo).I know i dont want my hammer dangling between my legs.Seems i mite have to customize an off shelf model.Going home for Tgiving and my dads renting space to a harness maker so hed have the stuff.

When I wore a toolbelt I always wore it in the front, never could get used to it in the back. I also had to do some tailoring to the belt to make a place to carry my square. Now they make them with slots for those. I did try the suspender thing and though it looks goofy, it sure was comfortable.
Back , started in about 1972.
I use a smaller leather or often a cloth apron for finish, less chance of damage to things as I pass through doorways etc.

The pockets can be switched around to suit your needs.

What, you use recycled vinyl siding to make up toolbelts?
;)
EDIT- Ah, ok, you fixed the link.
Yeah, nice rig, had one, but too bulky for my work, gave it up to one of the boys.

can't I be a "sidie"? I like pouches that aren't connected to the belt so I can move them around (or remove them) to suit the occasion. I used to have a leather "apron" that I wore backwards but the pouches seemed a little too far back. Also they dumped out when laying on a roof attatching facia; that was annoying.
Now I have an HD special CLC rig with velcro belt thing, two pouches and additional tape holder in back for holding a chalk line. I really like it. It could use some tool sleeves inside the pouches like Oxy has and I don't particularly like metal hammer holders; they are loud and can damage if not carefull. They should make hammer holder covers, duct tape works for now.

Same here. I buy the leather belt and two pouches separate so that I can adjust them to whereever they're least obtrusive. Three pocket bag on left for nails. Five pocket bag on right for tools.
Be forewarned......I wore an apron style belt for years. When the dang thing finally deteriorated, I went in search of a replacement. I had a lot of trouble finding the exact setup I was hoping to replace.....similar versions, but not exact.
Wasn't truly happy with any of them so I found myself in your situation. I ended up buying a belt with the pouches around the back simply because the choices were more abundant and the quality seemed greater than those of the aprons.
Been wearing it for several years now, and I can't stand it.
I keep my eyes open for an apron I like, but what I need to do is actively seek one out.
I woulda/coulda/shoulda bought an apron of inferior quality. Even if it hadn't lasted this long I would have been happier than I am now.
Once you you "backie", you'll wanna go back. (...er... front)

Thanks, but no.
I will eventually find an apron style I like. Can't stand having to reach around back for tools.

Yeah I dont know if i could get used to reaching around back.Plus after tearing my rotator cuff a couple years ago ive finally gotten around taking off a shirt normal again.
Guess i just buy some pockets and customize.Squares r a pain.Speed sq. gets looped over top of my chisel but those sheaths for reg.sq(combo or angle dangler) are too hi and jab me in side..I like the click plastic buckle too ..aint no rodeo star.
Finish work if i have my station set up i just wear bib apron and a magneto tape holder. That way all the router and table saw chips dont cling to my tuffted cashmere sweater.
treetalk, Just to clarify; I had posted that I wear mine backwards. regional thing I guess. I carry my hammer at the back , bags are loose bags and I carry them at the sides. her if you wear them like that it is wearing them backwards as opposed to having the bags in front of you.

hammer in the back is a major accident waiting to happen. A fall from any height even just a few feet and the hammer points straight down and becomes a fulcrum to snap your back. I was told thiss by my chiropractor,

Thanks for mentioning that . I am aware of the risk. Know a guy who took a header off a scaffold as result of his getting caught up on brace, it leveraged him right off the planking.

basswood, Now that looks very workable for trim work. Might just have to buy one at that price. thanks for the Tip!

I don't have that apron...but, it does look good and appears to be a bargin.I have a Oxy Tool Chest that I bought from Sphere. I use it for trim work with the lower bags removed. Wearing just the vest has been working well for me.http://www.toolbarn.com/product/occidental/2008/
I think I looked at that a while back.....the low price tag makes me leary.
Do you own one?
J. D. ReynoldsHome Improvements
I don't, but at that price...try it and keep it around for your occasional help, if you don't like it.
Now why could'nt I find that when I searched their web site? HMMMPPPHHH!
I got one of those and used it for a while. Its a good buy, but the pouches are too flimsy and dont stay open. I let my nephew use it when he helps me.
I can't deal with front belts. Mine is (sort of) a loose belt with 2+ pocket leather bag of the right and 4 pocket canvas on the left. Picked canvas to keep it a little lighter and less bulky. I also wear Carhardts, so I have extra leg pockets. For years I wore the hammer in the back loop. Doesn't work any more with the overalls - now the loop is too small for a handle, so now it goes in the leather loop on the right side. Speed square fits in the left rear pocket. (Wallet is in the front.)
All this is work in progress and subject to change tomorrow if I find something better for what I'm doing.

Might checkout the belts from Bucket Boss.
Easy on the wallet and not overly built.
My old cordura belt (a Nailers rig or somethin') finally gave it up after 20 years or so and I began my search for a replacement.
Ended up with a cheapo Bucket Boss 5033, The bags, hammer loop, tape pouch all hang loose on the belt (no velcro) but I clamp em down with suspenders.
The bags stay open and are decent size, its light, plenty of "compartments", speed square slot and one can easily change out the belt if one doesn't like the type it comes with....... now...... the tape pouch is a little too big (FatMax 35'), no pad on the belt and the hammer loop can move around a bit if you don't add velcro.
Tried out some of the bigger name rigs but I spend more time "inside" with trim, cabinets, flooring etc. and found most too bulky.
The little Bucket Boss also sets up similarly to my ol' rig and that was another primary reason for me to go with it.
