Top five homebuilding/repair opportunit
Twelve years ago I had a great job doing interior trim, cost plus, for the rich and shamelessly self-indulgent and we had a visitor… a beautiful young Russian architect. She was one of the prettiest women I have ever been up close to, and she came in first in a national competition for architects. Her prize was an all expenses paid visit with A-1 homebuilders in the USA.
She spent a week with us, and she said that back in Russia, pretty much the only work she got was finding clever ways to subdivide big buildings into apartments.
So what can we do to get thru bad times? You guys probably know better than I do but here goes:
1 Roofing
2 Plumbing
3 What the Russian architect did
4 Foundation work
5 Exterior doors

I don't know about you, but I'd be looking for the Russian architect.

a movement started to have everybody adopt hussein as their middle name .... to show how meaningless a name can be ... and show support for Obama

Mike, that's R. Hussien Rooster!!!!! lol.
I, showing my support for our next president, I hope. I sure hope our country is beyond race in the year 2008.
The RRooster came from one of my favorite songs by Alice in Chains - a Seattle Grunge/Rock band. The song, Rooster, is about the lead guitarists fathers experiences in the Vietnam War. The extra R was needed because I guess there is another Rooster registered here!!!!
And no, Mike, not a Rhode Island Red (although I am from the NE and have red hair - really)

Thanks for the explanation. You reminded me to download and send in an application for an absentee ballot. The mail carrier just picked it up, a few minutes ago. So looks like your protest has had the desired effect.
I never thought I would find that political point of view in this forum. Have you ever checked up on Obama's socialistic agenda? It has been summarized pretty well here: http://www.ibdeditorials.com This is Investors Business Daily magazine. You might have to search around a little for the summary. Why the link didn't turn blue I don't know. I'll double check it for accuracy and repost if necessary. Tyr

I've made no political statements, other than thanking Mike for reminding me to vote.
You may have noticed that there's a lot of digressions for banter on this board. Given that trend, it seems appropriate to take such exchanges at face value, not read more into them and/or see them as an opportunity to impose your political views.

have you ever read the background on investors business daily ?
.... do you know what their editorial policy is ?
do you know what their circulation is ?Mike Hussein Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Mike--I've liked your posts for years. As a matter of fact I generally don't thumb through investor mags very much. I'm usually investing in a tool, truck, or some aspect of business (I've run several). I do know IBD's circulation and some of its history. Can't say anybody has provided me with an editorial policy. Most of what I see in 15 second TV ads I consider as truth stretching--I've made short spots for a public business I ran--time is money (making the spots) and again running them on TV. Some bits and pieces from Obama surprised me so I did a little research (former police detective). I found some blatant misreporting by CBS (on their webpage)of a focus group that I was watching and listening to live on TV. So CBS has no credibility. Not that I expected it.
But one who's small business may literally hang in the balance depending on tax burdens and the possible cost of forced medical care (only started after WWII as a benefit to attract manpower)I start checking every source of info. IBD broke from the pack (my family started in the newspaper business in 1859 and my bro-in-law wrote and edited for papers until 2 years ago). Get more than one side of a story and somewhere in there is something closer to the truth. Other's brought up politics here--not me. More Fun With the Dumbest People on the Internet
David Weigel | August 11, 2008, 8:12am
It's been a while since I suited up and dumpster-dived in the Obama conspiracyverse. In my absence, I reckon that the average IQ there has dipped by 20-25 points. Take this latest revelation from Larry "Whitey Tape" Johnson.
Incredible! Ann Dunham met her second husband, Lolo Soetoro in 1966, in Hawaii. "Barry" Obama was, at this time, five years old. The only reasonable explanation is that Dunham and Soetoro built (or purchased) a Genesis Device to clone a new son, using DNA from Barack Obama Sr. that Dunham had pulled off one of his combs.Seriously. The "evidence" for Johnson's claim is the now-familiar murmurings of "sources" and GOP "operatives" (who appear in these things quicker than agents of H.Y.D.R.A.) and the fact—not reported in too many places, but never disputed—that when Lolo Soetoro became his adoptive father, the young Barack was enrolled in school as "Barack Soetoro." But was there anything at all odd about that as it concerns a candidate for president? Bill Clinton was William Blythe III until he turned 14 and his mother married Roger Clinton. Gerald Ford was born Leslie Lynch King, Jr., and three years later his mother married Gerald R. Ford and unofficially re-named her son. The younger Ford didn't legally change his name until his was 22 years old. Is Larry Johnson or one of his pseudononymous fellow travellers going to retroactively challenge their legitimacy or veracity? Probably not. There's nothing odd or foreign about Ford's and Clinton's lives—there's no way to stoke racial bigotry and paranoia, which is the indisputable goal of this stuff. Alas, this was only the second-stupidist event in Birth Certificatestan this week. The stupidest:
Maya Soetoro is Barack Obama's half-sister. She was born in 1970. In Indonesia. Fun fact: Indonesia is not part of Hawaii.>>>>>>

I want to apologize to all for my posts here that might not exactly be construed for adaptation to the theme of this 'General Discussion' forum of the Top five homebuilding/repair opportunities.
It was easy to lead away from it as building a hog farm structure might be at least associated with it being somewhat construction linked comments
unlike the polijive that so readily made it's way into this thread as well as the entire board.
You all should be ashamed of yourselves.
I am not familiar with Davis Weigel. And I see no conclusive evidence here. I still don't know enough about the man.
Windows and insulation. I'm turning down work in these two areas lately.
I was thinking windows and doors myself. Lots of people are looking at better energy efficiency and in storm areas there may even be an insurance incentive to get wind/impact protection.
People in Florida that bought a house in the last several years and got those steel shutter panels will be impact window or roll down shutter customers the first time they actually try to install the panels.
Very true. My sister bought a house in Ft Meyers Florida area, brand new in 2006. First time she put up her metal shutters was this year (for Gustav, I think). She has vowed to get roll down/up shutters ASAP.

Rot repair!
I have had a couple small rot repair calls on decks turn into 30K jobs.
Just got off of one that was a three day job to start, but when I started looking around and asking why is this going bad, and what else needs attention, I had been there over three weeks.
Look and find once you get to a job, what else is needed,
Do the gutter need cleaned? And since they were backed up, what other damage hs been done by the water.
Weatherization and insulation are big now as people face winter coming on with high energy costs.
For me - design work. A lot of people who are not ready finacially to build or add on, are ready to start the planning for "when we get ready to go"
Sorry, only three thoughts right now.

Well,
If you look at what weve got right now to look at ;
People cant get loans .
No money to loan.
People are losing their homes .
No way yet its going to be turned around.
It can only mean theres going to be a lot of people renting that would have been buying if all this hadnt happened.
The rental industry looks pretty good on a short sided view of the future.
Id try to find that Archy.

My partner and I just finished a two day job, bid at 1K, and it’s the only work we have had in three weeks. We have table saws, etc. out on two other jobs that have sunk into limbo. We are working in a rural area for rich people so the tools should be OK.
The job was heading off a sheep barn from caving in on itself that should have been done 10 years ago, and we gave the client good value for his money... frankly, I was impressed. And, in a way, I feel better about working in sheep #### than I ever did doing exotic interior trim for the rich and shamelessly self indulgent.
Stay in there.
I came home from coon hunting one night at 2 am. I noticed a hog house on fire . I turned around and went to the farmers house and woke him up pounding on the door and yelling . You have a fire at your #2 house . Call the fire department . His wife did when I said it . I told him I was going up there , did he have a hose? He went with me and we fought fire for 30 minutes while pigs were sreaming bloddy murder. Theirs.
He told the insurance agent he wanted me to have the reconstructionof the house because it would have been on the ground if I hadnt done what I did . Insurance guy nodded and it was mine . I didnt really like working in hog poop but it lasted all winter with out a day off.
Tim
ok, how did the hog house start on fire?
inquiring minds want to know
I dont have a clue .
I was going bird hunting one morning and I had to travel about 60 miles . Thermos to go in the truck to meet a buddy at his hunting area. Of course it was dark. I saw a chimney fire and stopped . They were burning their morning fire stoaking it up. I gotta piece of cake outta that deal and a hug.
Tim
Was there a heat source in the hog house?
be just liking to know these important things
Edited 10/22/2008 10:08 pm ET by rez
Yea there was brooder heaters that fired above the kids. Lots of gas every where but no explosion. He warned me that we were at risk because of it when we were getting hoses. But that didnt happen.
I dont remember how cold it was but it was winter with we me hide hunting coons .
ah, that explains things.
Not much experiece with hogs outside of taking a buddy to his pop's place once years back who was a hog farmer.
Had this prize hog on a 6inch high platform and it was like a cow it was so huge.
Had a large pasture area full of hogs of various sizes, some near the size of this one.
I noticed there was nothing between them and myself except one electrical strand of wire.
That fact coupled with the smell made me decide to leave fairly quick.
This area used to raise hogs . Cargil and tyson both dabbled in them. Cargil is known for turkeys and tyson of course chickens. Tyson has tried beef since they eat grass thats littered with chicken poop. They are not both back to raiseing what they are known for but I saw a lot of farms and I was a builder . Finished up working as a super with a big outfit. Anyway theres several different kinds of operations when youre talkin hogs. I never built a hog house by the way but they are several different kinds.
My brother had what I call range hogs that roamed a ranch. He had tank trucks that hauled waste from a TV dinner place and a sweet potato place that cooked the stuff. They found out the sweet ptatoes made better calof feed when it was strained . The hogs got the solids. He got fired up over that and bought a faring operation which is a baby factory. Come to find out he didnt know enough to get by although he had 2 thousand head of pigs running around . Big jump in difference . He tried to get me into it . Luckily I didnt do it as the hog market crashed. Its unhealthy you know to eat a hog. Turkey and chicken are healthy so there went the sales.
Tim
When building a hog house is it just local lumber used and no foundation to speak of?
Oh no.
Concrete floors with drains . The one I did there was several different deals . The males were kept on slanted floors that had what I called a concrete ditch drain that served as the main sewer line . Recirculating water from a pond . You shoot the pens down and then theres a 55 gal barrel deal on a swivel. Fill it up with water and turn it over with a weight switch. So that water washes the main drain outta the house . Water returns to the pond. Solids build up in the pond . Thers an agitaor that mixes it up like a washing machine and air bubble machine . Looks like a hot tub and a washing machine action. Pump comes on to drain the pond off gravity and the pump pressure and feeds a spinkller system to irrigate bottom feilds and of course fertilize.
Mamas laying in beds of concrete with a center drain. Small boiler makes warm and hot water . Spray baby pigs and all when they are up. Everybody gets washed and their bed cleaned. They like it .

Why build 'em their own place when you're not using the guest bedroom? ;-)
I spent a couple weeks in southern Georgia on business some years ago. Took a drive out of town almost every day, for an hour or so, and often got onto some pretty rural roads.
What I remember most vividly were the small hog farms, one in particular.
The house sat at the intersection of two dirt roads, about a hundred feet back from each. It was an old clapboard place, single story, maybe 1200 sqft. Hadn't seen a paint brush in many years.
The back yard space was fenced off in two low lying sections, both very muddy...black mud...right up to the back porch and surrounding the back of the house.
There was also one big shade tree in back, it's branches reaching out to cover most of the yard and the house.
The first indication that it was a hog farm was the powerful smell. Caught my nose off guard, coming up the road, a good quarter mile away.
Having already passed several small hog farms, I was ready for the aroma but this one was rank beyond anything I'd ever encountered. Amazing in it's intensity.
At first, driving closer, I didn't see any hogs. The place seemed almost abandoned, just one beat-up old stake body truck in the side yard.
Looking closer, I noticed some very large mounds of mud in the fenced areas. Too big to be hogs or were they?
Good God almighty! Those things are actually animals...hogs nearly the size of the truck!
Several of them that size, three or more that I could make out in that big pen, one of them resting right up against the house.
The whole scene was surreal to me, a carpenter who lived in dairy farming country in Upstate New York. The hogs were the size of milk cows and much bigger around.
I was slack jawed, in awe of the entire environment.
I was also feeling like I didn't belong there, as if I was witnessing something something private and perverse.
As I drove by slowly, I was glad to remember that my loaner car was twenty-some years old and bearing Georgia plates.
The image of moonshiners, shotguns sticking out of windows arose in my mind. That was enough to keep me from putting my foot on the brake, to take a closer look at that strangely fascinating place.
"Just keep rollin' along", I heard my hard earned wisdom say, "you don't want to find out how they greet Yankees at this little corner of God's green Earth, Georgia plates or no."
Even though the people of southern Georgia had been very cordial to me during that visit, I didn't care to explore the temperament of anyone who lived as those in that house did.

Hudson,
Ya outta be a writer.
Thanks rez, I enjoy painting word pictures about people and events, once in a while, but that's as far as my ambition goes.
I'd rather be out makin' new memories than sitting around going over the old ones. That happens enough by association, without evoking them on purpose.
Seems like a healthier way to live, now that I have more choices about what I do, and when and where I do it.
Sometimes I think it be great to have a camera somehow set in the side door of the car to be able to capture such moments as this.
I remember a Dylan tune when speaking of Alabama, which is pretty similar to Georgia in a non-state native view sort of way, saying something to the effect of
'Boy, you could die down there and be just another accident statistic'.
Edited 10/23/2008 5:44 pm ET by rez
The little pocket digital cameras that many of us have is the best answer for me. It's easy enough to switch it to video mode, one handed, and then stick it out the window and hold the button down.
I'll surely wear a pocket shirt on vacations so I can carry mine while driving, ready to shoot...video or stills.
Re: Dylan's observation; I haven't spent any time in Alabama or Mississippi to speak of but my general impression is that Georgia is friendlier to Yankees than either of those two.
I'm keeping busy lately with rot repair, and just got wind of a handicap upgrade for a townhome that's just a year old. I think those upgrades (h/c shower and the like) will just get bigger and bigger as the boomer generation ages "in place."
