I am searching for ideas on the design and construction of a trellis for my home. I would like some ideas on where to find designs and some ‘rules of thumb’ as far as layers and sizes of wood pieces, spacing, wood choices, ornamentation, etc. It will be rather big, approximately 12′ x 20′. Also suggestions as to plants suitable for covering it.(I am in East Tennessee) My home is a sort of 60’s contemporary ranch. I am leaning toward tapered, squared posts like seen on bungalow style houses but am at a loss as to how to design the upper layers. I can handle the construction details (I think) but suggestions on that aspect would be welcome also. Thanks.

Any number of books can help you out; also try woodsmith for some nice plans deliverable online. I think I like the online delivery feature the best!
*Henry - Try to contact Lawrence Winterburn at [email protected]. If he doaesn't have what you need, he can steer you in the right direction. He's a good guy, and does a lot of this outdoor type of stuff. - jb
*Ever eat kiwi fruit. get one of the Kiwi's, plant it and you are suposed to get fruit in 5-7 years --- it is really neat how it grows -- lot like a honey suckle plant -- just goes and goes.
*Hey henry, The style of work you are speaking of is called Craftsman. Clean basic details with lots of gently tapering details. Our work is mainly Arts and Crafts in style...early 1900's. Trelliswork has very few rules. It is an open game. Try to shelter the structural members using drip edges etc...will last longer. Pre staining and treating all the end cuts will also go a long way to increasing endurance. Drop by the site and have a look...probably will go a long way to inspiring ideas. http://www.gardenstructure.com Good luck with your project.
*Recently my wife and I visited North Carolina and toured the Biltmore mansion in Asheville (there's some fine homebuilding!). The very large terrace is completly shaded by the "arbor of wisteria and trumpet creeper vines."Rich Beckman
