Hello,
I have aluminium siding on the exterior of my house. I was replacing the exhaust vent and noticed that the aluminium siding was placed on top of another siding. This siding seems to be made up of granular rubber. Does anyone know what this is? Please see the picture below.
So there is plywood and the rubber siding and then there is another plywood and on top of the plywood is the aluminium siding.
I was thinking of insulating with cellulose in the wall cavities. Since there are apparently two sidings installed, I am not sure insulating would be a good idea since the house won’t be able to “breathe”.
Thank you for your responses.

Are you sure the stuff isn't simply asphalt shingles?
Yes, it seems to be asphalt shingles. But aren't those used in roofing?
They used to be quite common for siding, prior to about 1950. They got a bad "image" (the were very cheap, after all), but actually were quite durable and weather-worthy, when properly installed. And very low maintenance.
Hi there, that was a very cheap asphalt siding, just like roof shingles. Most were designed to look like brick but some had a lap siding pattern as well. I remember seeing it in green with "mortar joints". One name was "Insulbrick" and the manufacturer claimed it made the house not only waterproof but added insulation as well. I'd say most of it ever installed is now covered by vinyl or aluminum.

Or moss.
