*I'm against it, but I bucking to be a hothead. What's a Hebel block?
*A Hebel block is a block made of AAC ( autoclaved areated concrete ) used a lot in Europe as it has very high R values. It can be sawn with a hand saw and is glued together.
*If you stack more than 7 hebel blocks up, will it pass code?Blue
*
How do you attach to the blocks?
*
Timber plate tied to slab with continous threaded rod at distances set by code.
*JD et al. Autoclaved Concrete or Precast Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (PAAC) is made from sand, cement, lime, gypsum,,an expanding agent and water. It is chemically expanded and steam- cured in an autoclave--pressure cooker. The biggest concern with PAAC is its sensitivity to water..it is hygroscopic. For example rain penetrating the material does not hurt it but it does raise particular hell with its thermal performance. The materialk must be isolated as much as possible from groundwater and rain.GeneL
*JD, et al. I posted a response earl;ier but it looks as though it's lost.Precast Aerated Autoclaved Concrete (PAAC) is made of sand, cement, lime, gypsum, an expanding agent nd water. the mix is chemically expanded and steam-cured under pressure in an autoclave--pressure cooker, to form blocks. The basic block is 10-inches high by 25-inches lon, in thicknesses of 4-8-10 inches. Compared to a stnadrad concrete block the PAAC block weight 46 pounds.Mark, I don;t know what you consider high R-value. An 8-inch PAAC wall has an R-value of about R-10, or R1.24/inch. Although Ytong, another manufacturer of PAAC, claims R-20 for their 8-inch thick block. You can check this out at the Web site: http://www.Ytong-USA.com.The biggest concern with PAAC is its sensitivity to moisture: it is hygroscopic. *Gene:I picked up your book. Complete Building Construction, Fourth edition. The illustrations really add a lot. I had looked at a previous edition, but, passed on the purchase, partially because of it's lack of graphic content.
*Mat G. My only regret about the book is that I was not allowed to 100% revise it. I had to cut out a lot of material and illustrations. Chapters 1,2,3,8,9,10,11,17,23,24 and Appendix and new glossary are new. Chapter 4 is original. Chapter 5 is original except for page 113, MORTAR, and continuing on to poage 115. Page 126 FILL INSULATION was added as was Figure 5-31.Chapter 6 is original except for page 135, FLUE LINING, 1st paragraph was added. Page 140 to 144 FIREPLACES was added. Page 148, IMPORTANCE OF A HEARTH was rewitten to bring it in compliance with code requirements.Chapter 7 WOODS, DECAY OF LUMBER, pages 173-174 was rewritten.Chapter 8 is original except for page 195, ANCHORAGE OF SILLS, to page 199, BRIDGING BETWEEN JOISTS.Chapter 12, ROOF FRAMING is original except for Figure 12-18. Chapter 13, ROOFING is original except for the addition of pages 337-341 UNDERLAYMENT. Chapter 14 is original.Chapter 15 is original from pages 361 to 365. All material beginning on page 365, RIGID EXTERIOR FOAM SHEATHING, and continuing on to page 372, is new. Page 377 HARDBOARD SIDING is new material. the remained of the chapter is original.Pages 367 to 399 in Chapter 16 Windows is new material. Remainder of chapter is original.I hope you find it usefull and informative.Any commnets on improving it are welcome. GeneL
