I am in the process of hanging a chair rail. I have chosen pine. I want to keep the pine color natural so I have chosen a polycrylic finish only, no stain. However, I know that there are two ways that wood will yellow over time The finish will yellow if it is oil based, and the wood will yellow due to sun light. The polycrylic I have chosen is water based. How can I get UV protection as well?
Sikkens sells a product called Sikkens Cetal UV Interior but it is VERY hard to find. I would apply this and then the polycylic over it.
Does anyone know of a better method? Does a water based finish exist for interior wood that has UV protection already in it? I have searched the internet with no success.
Thanks

You should be able to find a waterbased UV finish from any major manufacturer. Oil-based also works fine, if it has (stated on the can) UV protection. The finish will not cause it to age or darken over time, but does have an amber hue compared to the waterbased polyacrylics.
Are you trying to protect the wood or the finish from UV? The Sikkens exterior products supposedly protect the wood via very fine pigments in their semi-transparent exterior stains, and presumably they may have something similar in an interior stain.
The varnish itself needs to protect itself -- ie, be UV resistant. But it's unlikely to protect the wood very much.
One reasons why you MIGHT be having a problem finding the UV inhibitor that, in some states, may have banned the inhibitor. Something to do with the VOC's.
About 6 years ago we were using Guardsman lacquer, now made by Lily and they had an additive that was not available in Ca. We managed to get a hold of it through Nevada.
Try contacting a company called Brookline Veneers http://www.veneers.com
They sell veneers that are dyed and are light sensitive. They can recommend some finishes just for the application you need. I have used their products in the past and along with their recommended finishes. They were potent (wear a mask)
