Can someone help me with a question regarding installing a skylight?
I am installing a new Velux 104 skylight into an existing asphalt shingle roof. I have peeled back the shingles about a foot away from the opening. There are two layers of old shingle roof under the existing roof totaling about 1″ thickness between the batten wood roof and the underside of the newer shingles.
My question is this: Must the mounting brackets for the skylight be fastened directly to the wood under the shingles, or can I fasten them to the top of the layer of old shingles? I will be putting a layer of rain/ice flashing felt around the perimeter of the skylight, as well as the EDL metal flashing kit. I am reluctant to disrupt the old shingles if I can avoid it.
This is Southern California.
Thanks for any help,
Joe

Definitely go to the wood. The guy that gets to tear off all those layers of shingles will thank you, not to mention that it's the right thing to do. If you're gonna take the time to do the job, you may as well do it right.
