You might want to search the archives for feedback on individual suppliers. Had I done that prior to ordering from Renovator’s supply, I never would have used them (and suffered the consequences).

I have a customer that's getting close to completion of a new home and is trying to find entry sets and locksets that resemble the old victorian style door hardware. Anyone have any resources?
Thanks,
Frank "Mad Dog" Maglin
*MD - I hope that you aren't suprised to hear from me! Our usual sources:b Crown City Hardware - (800) 950-1047 b Liz's Antique Hardware - (323) 939-4403 or (800) 939-9003b Ball & Ball - (800) 257-3711b Historic Housefitters (800) 247-4111Might want to look here too. (What did I do wrong here on hotlink?).Best -Jeffb Been there, done that, locked up
*Mad Dog, try these guys:There's also a place I've ordered stuff from before called Renovaters Supply or something. I can't find it on the web, but I'll find the catalog at home tonight. Lots of Victorian things.
*Renovator's Supply - (800) 659-2211Antique Hardware & Home, as CLS suggests, is good too.Jeff
*Hey Jeff, and CLS, Thanks for the links.Mad Dog Maglin
*Jeff, I assume you were telling people to look here. You had it close, putting the address in carats (). But, you need two sets of carats, one set on either side of the hotlinked word(s). Inside the first pair of carats you put (a href="http://www.whatever.com/something.htm"). Note that you don't put the parentheses in there too. That basically says, begin 'a', with an href equal to such-and-such address. I don't know what 'href' means, I can only guess. But, I also don't particularly care so long as it works. Then you have your word(s) that you want to be linked. In my example, it was the word 'here'. Then the other carats contain (/a), again without the parentheses. That says to end 'a'. And there's your hotlink.Sean
*Thanks, Sean, I owe you something in return - how about this ? Sort of like those 'rounds' that get bought over at the Woodshed Tavern.Jeffb Been there, done that, upset stomach ...
*Out of the recent Houses issue of Fine Homebuilding (page 102):> All our hardware for the house came from the Michael M. Coldron Company in North East, Maryland (410-287-2082). Mike has one of the largst collection of 18th- and 19th-century hardware anywhere in the United States.Rich Beckman
*MMMMMMMMMMMMMM, cheesesteak! You must be one of them gentleman and a scholar types... although you seem to be a light weight. Upset stomach? From cheesesteak? Puh-leeze!Not to bite the hand that feeds me, but how are they out there, anyway? I have had no luck getting a decent steak outside the Philly area, but never been to California either. Results range from poorly cooked Steak-ums to - my favorite - a regular steak with a slice of cheese on top. You've settled the decision about what to have for lunch tomorrow, though, thanks! If I weren't already in bed as I type, I'd be on my way to get one!Sean
*Renovaters Supply has always been reliable for me. I especially like their cabinetry hardware and door knob/lock sets.

*I used renovators supply once years ago. The stuff was junk. Check out traditional building for a list of suppliers, but don't waste time on garbage unless you need it cheap and don't care about quality at all.SHG
*Yup - ITA. And Crown City is a 'clearinghouse' for various manufacturers of varying quality. Best to order (1) thing if you can and check it out before committing to a large order, IMO.Jeff
*You're kidding?! I am pretty picky and the (3) things I've ordered were wonderful and high quality. Perhaps they've changed or the things I bought were of good quality? I don't know. I had very good luck with them.
*Nothing wrong with it if they worked for you. I bought some brass door hardware from them in the early 80's. Back then it was tough finding stuff and they had the only catalogue around. The hardware was cheap and flimsy. Good hardware is very important to me (on my last job, I had a variety of cabinet hinges custom made, because I was disappointed with the selection, which ended up costing almost $30 per! just to get the right feel to the hinge). So I may be a bit overly critical, although I love old hardware, with weight and heft to it, and full detail, and made with precision. Say, if anyone is demo'ing old houses and is tossing old, painted (but good quality) hardware, send it to me. I'm always looking for hardware to complete restorations.SHG
*I agree about old hardware. I love it when I can find it. I'd give anything to be near enough to an old salvage yard where you can just rummage through bins of the stuff and take what you want. Unfortunately, salvaged materials are very popular around here - trendy almost, so it's next to impossible to find it.
*Love the old hardware. We have severasl salvage companys in Louisiana. Rica's in New Orleans, The Bank in New Orleans (504) 523-2702.
*Along these lines...Anyone here familiar with "Period Homes", a publication apparently containing sources for "historical products"? I've been toying with an offer from the publisher for two free issues...Thanks, Steve
